Updates on recent projects

Burns Gym improvements in the last three years:

  • New paint: We started our facelift of the historic structure when we repainted the main walls in Burns Gym.
  • New gym floor: We completed a full replacement of the Burns Hall gym floor in the summer and fall of 2023. The $190,000 price tag was generated through the 2022 Big Give, Spirit 2022, additional donations, plus parish and school dollars.
  • Stage renovations: During the Norfolk Area Big Give in 2023, we raised more than $52,000 to begin renovating the stage in Burns Gym. Since then, we have replaced the stage floor and the curtains. We are presently awaiting a second bid to replace the stage lights. Once that is completed, we hope to be considered as a host for one-act contests.

In addition to improving Burns Gym:

  • Vehicle upgrades: Thanks to funding generated at Spirit 2023, we were able to replace two of our minivans used to transport students.
  • More storage: Our finance council accepted a bid of more than $300,000 to construct a new building southwest of our football, track and field facilities. The new construction will address storage needs for athletics, drama, maintenance, and school-owned vehicles, including buses. This project is being funded by previous dollars raised in 2024 by the Nebraska Catholic Day of Giving, the Big Give and Spirit, along with parish and school funds.

What's next?

The next phase of the Burns Hall facelift is the lower-level locker rooms used by our junior high students for physical education and extracurricular activities. Many of the showers no longer work properly, stall dividers are missing, at least one of the toilets is leaking, and there is a hole in the ceiling, among issues we need to address. We have a bid of $22,500 to replace existing shower heads, sinks, toilets, and wall panels. We expect that the rest of the needed work will bring the project into the $50,000 range.

Multiple generations of alumni have used these locker rooms in the past and likely have memories of celebrating wins or spending time with classmates or teammates. With your help, we will make these locker rooms a safe place for students as we continue to sustain Burns Gym for future victories and memories.

We invite you to participate in this year’s Norfolk Area Big Give with a contribution of whatever you prayerfully deem as appropriate to contribute. Our goal is to raise the entire $50,000 between this and the Nebraska Catholic Day of Giving earlier in May.
